Using and protecting your practice data

Does Jaap Counter work offline?

Core counting and local practice features are designed to work offline. Google Drive backup, Google Play purchase checks, and Firebase services need connectivity when they run.

What is Mantra Focus?

Tap the mantra name on the counter to open a distraction-free view of the complete mantra. Tap, Auto, and Volume counting continue in the selected mode, and Back returns to the Classic counter.

How does Background Auto Count work?

When you explicitly enable it for Auto mode, counting can continue while the screen is off, the phone is locked, or another app is visible. Android shows a persistent notification, and Jaap Counter asks you to add or discard pending japs before they enter your Journey.

Can I add japs completed outside the live counter?

Yes. Add Count Manually lets you choose Today, Yesterday, or an earlier date and review the profile, date, amount, and resulting total before saving. Today's additions also keep the live mala position aligned.

How do I create a local backup?

Use Jaap Counter's local backup or export option and save the file in a location you control. Keep a current copy before clearing app storage, resetting the app, or changing devices.

How does Google Drive backup work?

Drive backup is optional. Premium enables snapshot creation and automatic backup in Google's hidden appDataFolder. Jaap Counter keeps the newest two complete snapshots and cannot browse unrelated Drive files.

Can I restore a Drive backup without Premium?

Yes. Restoring an existing Drive snapshot remains free. Premium is required to create new Drive snapshots or enable automatic Drive backup.

Are wallpapers included in backups?

Selected wallpaper files are stored locally and are included in Drive snapshots when Drive backup is used.

How do I switch Google accounts?

Disconnect Drive in Jaap Counter, then connect the account you want to use. Hidden snapshots under the previous account may remain there until you delete that account's hidden app data.

What happens when I disconnect Drive?

Disconnecting stops future access and automatic backup. It does not necessarily delete hidden snapshot data already stored in Google Drive.

How do I delete hidden Drive data or revoke access?

Deletion and access revocation are separate actions. Follow the steps on the Data Management page for both.

How do I restore Premium?

Use the restore-purchase option in Jaap Counter and confirm that Google Play is signed into the account that bought Premium. Google Play, not Jaap Counter, manages the purchase account and transaction.

Why does the app request notification permission?

Notifications may be used for reminders and summaries. Android also requires a persistent foreground-service notification when explicitly enabled background automatic counting is active.

When does automatic backup run?

Timing can vary because Android may defer background work based on connectivity, battery, permissions, and system conditions. Open the app to review backup status when a current copy is important.

How does volume-button counting work?

When volume-button mode is active, Volume Up can add a count and Volume Down can undo. Behavior may depend on the active screen and Android device handling.
